Therapeutic Indications
Marshmallow's botanical name "Althea officinalis" translates to "official cure". This attitude towards marshmallow is evident in the types of conditions it has historically been used to treat.
Marshmallow has been shown to boost the bodies immune system, helping to ward off infectious disease. It is a vital component of many formulas for the treatment and prevention of cystis and its vital mucilage soothes and
protects mucus membranes.
Mucilage is the smooth, slippery substance in marshmallow root which can soothe and protect irritated mucous membranes. Although marshmallow has primarily been used for the respiratory and digestive tracts, its high
mucilage content may also provide some minor relief for urinary tract and skin infections.
Marshmallow is a common ingredient in skin ointments and gels. Externally it is beneficial in treating chilblains, varicose veins, boils, skin ulcers, minor burns, scrapes, and chapped or sunburned skin.
Storage
Marshmallow should be stored tightly sealed in a cool, dry area until it is required.
Usage
Internally
Take 25 drops 3 times daily before meals.
Externally
Use as necessary. Mixing marshmallow extract with aloe vera gel allows for easer and more beneficial external
therapeutic use.
