Therapeutic Indications
Lemon is a small evergreen reaching up to 6 meters in height. It has serrated oval leaves, stiff thorns and very fragrant flowers. When the fruit turns from green to yellow it is ripe. The oil has a very fresh and sharp citrus fragrance. Native to Asia
and possibly east India this plant now grows wild in the Mediterranean, especially in Spain and Portugal. It is cultivated in Italy, Sicily, Cyprus, Israel, Guinea, California and Florida.
Traditionally, the juice and peel are used as a domestic seasoning. It is a citrus species that is high in vitamins A and C. In some countries lemon is a "cure all" especially in regard to infections. It was used on the
English ships for malaria and typhoid and mostly for the prevention of scurvy. When taken internally the juice is invaluable for acidic disorders, such as arthritis and rheumatism and of great benefit in dysentery and liver congestion.
Therapeutically it is used for acne, anemia, brittle nails, boils, corns, cuts, greasy skin, insect bites, mouth ulcers, spots, varicose veins and warts. It is also beneficial for arthritis, cellulitis, high blood
pressure, nosebleeds, obesity, poor circulation, rheumatism, asthma, throat infection colds, flue fever and infections.
Commercially, it is used as a flavouring agent in pharmaceuticals. It is used a great deal as a fragrant ingredient in soaps, detergents, cosmetics, toilet waters, and perfumes. In the food industry it is used in most
types of products including alcoholic beverages and soft drinks.
