Indications
Ancient Greeks and Egyptians cherished the feverfew plant as a valuable remedy because of its anti-inflammatory qualities. Recently, this herb has become immensely popular for its ability to reduce prostaglandins and histamines. The decrease of these
compounds alleviates blood vessel spasms, which are the common cause of migraines and headaches. This pretty herb provides migraine sufferers with hope for relief that has not been possible through conventional pharmaceutical remedies.
Contraindications
Do not use during pregnancy.
Therapeutic Indications
Feverfew has obtained a highly deserved reputation as a primary remedy in the treatment of migraine headaches, notably for those who are relieved by applying warmth to the head. Traditionally, feverfew was used
to relieve many types of pains, especially those associated with inflammation; namely arthritis and rheumatism. Feverfew, as its name indicates, is an excellent remedy for flu and other respiratory infections that are associated with fevers. In addition,
many women find this herb helpful in relieving the pain of menstrual cramping.
In a multitude of Canadian and international clinical studies, feverfew has repeatedly shown its effectiveness in alleviating the pain common to migraine headaches and inflammations. Scientists believe that the active
constituent in this medicinal, parthenolide, inhibits the release of serotonin in the brain. This inhibition reduces the frequency and severity of attacks.Feverfew is also beneficial in treating arthritis, especially when the condition is in its painful,
active, inflammatory stage.
A recent English study found a significant number (over 70%) of patients experienced relief from migraines with less nausea and vomiting normal to other migraine remedies. Optimum results are achieved when feverfew is
taken over extended periods of time; the severity and frequency of migraines are reduced if this regimen is followed.
Storage
Feverfew should be stored tightly sealed in a cool, dry area until it is required.
Usage
Take 6-10 drops 3 times daily one half hour before meals for an extended period of time (three to four months). Salivate before swallowing.
