Therapeutic Indications
Fennel is a biennial or perennial herb and grows up to 2 meters in height. It has feathery leaves and the flowers are a golden yellow. There are two main varieties of fennel: bitter or common fennel. Common fennel is slightly taller with less divided leaves occurring in a cultivated or wild form and sweet fennel which is always cultivated. Sweet fennel is thought to have originated on the island of Malta, having later been introduced by monks or crusaders to the rest of Europe thousands of years ago. It is now grown mainly in France, Italy and Greece.

The traditional uses for this ancient herb lies in the belief that it would convey longevity, courage and strength. It was also used to ward off the evil spirits, to strengthen eyesight and to neutralize poisons. In eastern and western herbalism it is considered good for obstructions of the liver, spleen and gall bladder. It is also good for digestive complaints such as colic, indigestion, nausea and flatulence when included in gripe water. It has a long tradition of use for obesity and it also increases the milk of nursing mothers.

Therapeutic uses include bruises, cellulitis, obesity, rheumatism, obesity, rheumatism, asthma, bronchitis, anorexia, colic, flatulence, hiccough, nausea, and menopausal problems.

The pharmaceutical industry uses fennel oil in cough drops, lozenges as well as in laxative preparations. It is used extensively as a flavour ingredient in all major food categories, in soft drinks and especially in alcoholic drinks such as brandy and liqueurs. Fennel oil is used in soaps, toiletries and perfumes. It also provides a good masking agent for industrial products, room sprays, insecticides etc.

Storage
Fennel oil should be stored in a cool, dry area until it is used. Once opened, refrigeration and tightly closing the cap will prolong its shelf life.

Usage
Stomach Upset & Flatulence:
For a troubled stomach gently massage the abdomen in a clockwise direction with a fennel based massage oil blend. One of the principal ingredients in Fennel is anethole, which assists in the metabolism of fats and aids a thorough digestion.

Hangover: Research has verified that anethole reduces the ill effects of alcohol on the body, making Fennel oil a useful treatment for providing short term relief for alcoholic hangovers.

Bruises: Dilute and gently massage to the bruised area to promote healing.

Fluid Retention & Cellulite: Fennel oil is nature's body cleanser. To assist in the treatment of fluid retention and cellulite, massage the body with a massage oil blend or dissolve fennel oil in a therapeutic bath. If fluid retention persists, see a qualified health practitioner.
