Therapeutic Indications
This tall evergreen beautiful tree can grow as tall as 90 meters. The young trees have bluish-green oval leaves, but once mature they develop long, narrow, yellowish leaves and bear creamy-white flowers. The pale gray bark is often covered in a white
powder. The oil from this plant has a very clear, sharp and piercing aroma. In spite of the fact that this tree is native to Tasmania and Australia very little of the oil comes from either country. It is cultivated in Spain, Portugal and also in Brazil,
California, Russia and China.
A traditional household remedy in Australia, the leaves and oil are especially used for respiratory ailments such a bronchitis and croup. The dried leaves are smoked like tobacco for asthma. It is also used for feverish
conditions (malaria, typhoid, cholera, etc.) and for skin problems like burns, ulcers and wounds. Aqueous extracts are used for aching joints, bacterial dysentery and ringworm. This plant is now being used for similar reasons in western and eastern
medicine.
Therapeutically, eucalyptus is used for burns, blisters, cuts, insect bites, insect repellent, skin infections and wounds. It is also helpful for muscular aches and pains, poor circulation, rheumatoid arthritis and
sprains. For respiratory problems such as asthma, bronchitis, coughs sinusitis and throat infections it is also of benefit. It has been used for chicken pox, colds, epidemics, flu and measles, headaches, and neuralgia.
In the commercial arena eucalyptus is used in the preparations of liniments, inhalants, cough syrups, ointments, toothpaste, pharmaceutical flavorings. It is also used in the veterinary field and in dentistry. It is a
fragrance that is used in soaps, detergents and toiletries. It is also a flavour ingredient in most major food categories.
Storage
Eucalyptus oil should be stored in a cool, dry area until it is used. Once opened, refrigeration and tightly closing the cap will prolong its shelf life.
