Therapeutic Indications
Growing up to 1 meter in height this biennial or perennial herb has large hairy leaves that are green with a touch of purple and small blue flowers.
The fragrance of this oil is rather nutty and herbal at the same time. It has a somewhat heavy scent. It is native to southern Europe and cultivated worldwide especially in the Mediterranean regions, Russia, USA,
England, Morocco and Central Europe.
Traditionally, this herb was held in high esteem in the Middle ages but in our modern day seems to have fallen out of use. It was used for digestive disorders, kidney problems, and uterine and menstrual complaints,
cleansing ulcers and as a general nerve tonic. The mucilage from the seeds was used for treating tumors and for removing dust particles from the eyes. It cools inflammations and is especially useful for throat and respiratory infections.
Therapeutically this oil is used for acne, boils dandruff, hair loss, inflamed conditions, oily skin and hair, ulcers and wrinkles. It has been helpful in cases of high blood pressure, muscular aches and pains, asthma,
throat infections and whooping cough. It is also used to treat colic, cramps, flatulence, depression, migraine, nervous tension and stress related disorders.
Commercially, the oil and the absolute are used as fragrance components and fixatives in soaps, detergents, cosmetics and perfumes. The oil is used in the food and drink industry especially in the production of wines
with a muscatel flavour.
Storage
Clary Sage oil should be stored in a cool, dry area until it is used. Once opened, refrigeration and tightly closing the cap will prolong its shelf life.
