Therapeutic Indications
Cinnamon Cassia is a slender evergreen reaching up to 20 meters height. It has leathery leaves and small white flowers. It has a sweet, sharp and spicy fragrance. For commercial use it can be cut back to bushes rather than dealing with a tree. It is
native to the southeastern parts of China, and a smaller amount can be found in Vietnam and India.
Traditionally, this oil is used as a spice. It is used medicinally for digestive problems such as flatulence, colic, diarrhoea and nausea. It was also used for the common cold, rheumatism, kidney and reproductive
complaints. The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia lists the powdered bark as an aid for flatulent dyspepsia or colic with nausea.
Commercially, the pharmaceutical industry uses it in mouthwashes, toothpaste, gargles because of the bactericidal properties. It is used in flavouring food, chewing gum, alcoholic beverages and soft drinks. It is the
primary flavouring used in the cinnamon heart candies. A small amount is used in perfumes and cosmetics because of its dark colour.
Storage
Cinnamon oil should be stored in a cool, dry area until it is used. Once opened, refrigeration and tightly closing the cap will prolong its shelf life.
