Indications
In Chinese medicine, Astragalus root is regarded as one of the most important tonic and health promoting plants. It has enjoyed a long history of use in strengthening the Wei Ch'i or "defensive energy" or as we call it, the immune system. Regarded as a
potent tonic for increasing energy levels and stimulating the immune system, astragalus has also been employed effectively as a diuretic, a vasodilator and as a treatment for respiratory infections. It is used to increase resistance to disease and
infections, restore a depressed immune system, restore energy reserves and reduce stress.
Contraindications
Avoid use during pregnancy and during feverish conditions.
Therapeutic Indications
Astragalus has been used for centuries primarily in Asia to support general immune function. The polysaccharides in Astragalus have been shown to intensify phagocytosis of reticulo-endothelial systems, stimulate
pituitary-adrenal cortical activity and restore depleted red blood cell formation in bone marrow. Astragalus is also one of the herbs known to stimulate the bodies natural production of interferon. These immune supportive properties making Astragalus
ideal in all cases of immune deficiency. This can range from someone who easily `catches' colds to someone with cancer.
Astragalus is believed to improve peripheral tissue oxygen delivery and may also serve as an adaptogen (much like ginseng) by improving the bodies response to and ability to handle stress by augmenting adrenal activity. This property also helps the body combat fatigue.
Astragalus root is also popular in treating any long term sickness, or weakness. It has been considered a critical part for the treatment of chronic infections of mucous membranes, and is used as a tonic in fatigue or
general weakness, loss of appetite and spontaneous perspiration due to adrenal weakness.
Modern research on this herb has focused on its use as a post-treatment use as an immunostimulant for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Studies at the National Cancer Institute shown that astragalus strengthens a cancer
patient's immune system. Researchers believe on the basis of cell studies that astragalus augments the white blood cells that fight disease. There is clinical evidence that cancer patients given astragalus during chemotherapy and radiation, both of which
reduce the body's natural immunity while attacking the cancer, recover significantly faster and live longer. It is theorized that astragalus does not directly attack cancers themselves, but instead strengthens the body's immune system. In these same
studies it also has been found that Astragalus promotes adrenal cortical function, which also is critically diminished in cancer patients.
Early clinical studies in China suggest astragalus root might also benefit people with chronic viral hepatitis, though it may take one to two months to see results. Astragalus is presently being investigated as a
possible treatment for people living with AIDS and for its potentials to prolong life.
Storage
Astragalus Root should be stored tightly sealed in a cool, dry area until it is required.
Usage
Take 3-6 drops 3 times daily before meals. For the treatment of serious conditions it may take an extended period of time (three to four months) to notice results.
