Indications
Aloe vera is a potent natural healer both internally and externally. Many homes have an aloe vera plant in the kitchen in case of accidents, making this one of the most common herbs in North America. Topical use of this plant provides immediate relief, and aids to speed the healing of cuts, scratches, and minor burns. Aloe also prevents scarring because of its high moisturizing properties.

These fleshy green leaves are also known to act as a potent laxative, and are often prescribed when soft stools are desired (i.e. rectal surgery, hemorrhoids, etc.). In small doses Aloe vera increases menstrual flow.

Contraindications
Avoid internal use during pregnancy and while breast feeding.

Therapeutic Indications
For centuries, Aloe has been used for its medicinal qualities. Aloe vera, known by the ancient Egyptians, was described in the Ebers papyrus. Drawings of the plant found on the walls of ancient Egyptian temples show that Aloe vera pulp was used externally in the treatment of burns, ulcers, and parasitic infections of the skin. The famous Greek teacher, Hippocrates described Aloe vera and its medicinal value in his writings. Aloe has been used in the Middle East and China for the treatment of wounds and various diseases for centuries.

Today, Aloe vera is used in numerous products, including beverages, lotions, shampoos, skin care, and as a dietary supplement. Aloe vera is recognized as one of nature's gifts to mankind.

Native to Africa, there are over 300 species of plants considered valuable aloes. The most often used is Aloe vera. It is considered the most popular herb in North America, due to its effective soothing and healing properties.

In addition to being a topical treatment, internal traditional use of aloe vera includes relieving constipation, ulcers, digestive problems, and in cases where soft stools are desired (includes rectal surgery, inflamed hemorrhoids, etc.). The juice prepared from this plant is bitter and a potent cathartic, acting mostly on the colon. Aloe vera also increases menstrual flow when taken in small doses. Studies show aloe vera juice contains anticancer and anti-oxidant characteristics, and that internal use benefits the healing of external wounds, abrasions, and burns.

Care should be taken when using this product internally, as over-usage could lead to dehydration, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, kidney inflammation, and depletion of minerals (especially potassium). Menstruating, pregnant, or nursing women should also avoid internal use of aloe vera.

Aloe vera gel is obtained from the inside of the leaves, after the juice has been extracted. Often called the "First Aid" plant, this herb is traditionally known for its beneficial external effects on many types of skin damage such as minor burns (including sunburns), insect bites, scratches, frostbite, and bruises. Historical topical use of aloe vera gel includes wound healing, scar reduction, analgesic (pain reliever), and as an antiseptic.

Scientific investigation into the benefits of aloe vera determined gel preparations from this herb stimulate the regeneration of skin cells. It promotes the repair of damaged dermal tissue, and initiates the production of new tissue quicker than conventional healing remedies. Remnant scarring was also reduced. In addition, aloe gel was shown to have no negative side-effects with unlimited topical application. Studies performed in various laboratories proved the skin's ability to renew was heightened as the concentration and amount of gel was increased. Constituents within aloe promote collagen formation (essential to healing), and prevent infection in damaged areas. This herb is truly a product that everyone should have on hand!
